The most common type of U.S. student visa is the F-1 Visa, which allows international students to study full-time at accredited academic institutions including colleges, universities, high schools, language training programs, and other academic institutions.

1. Eligibility Criteria

  • Acceptance from a SEVP-approved school
  • Issued Form I-20 from the institution
  • Proof of sufficient funds to cover tuition and living expenses
  • Proof of ties to your home country
  • English language proficiency (e.g., TOEFL or IELTS scores)
  • Valid passport
  • 2. Application Process

  • Apply to and get accepted by a SEVP-certified U.S. school
  • Receive Form I-20
  • Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee (USD $350)
  • Complete DS-160 form online
  • Pay visa application fee (USD $185)
  • Schedule and attend a visa interview
  • Submit required documents

  • 4. Visa Duration

    The F-1 visa is valid for the length of your study program. Students may remain in the U.S. for up to 60 days after program completion unless applying for an extension or change of status.

    5. Work Opportunities

  • On-campus employment (up to 20 hours per week during school sessions)
  • Optional Practical Training (OPT): up to 12 months of work after graduation (36 months for STEM fields)
  • Curricular Practical Training (CPT): work during your study program related to your major
  • 6. Dependents

    F-2 visas are available for spouses and children. F-2 spouses cannot work or study full-time; however, F-2 children may attend school.
